SmartCHANGE contributed to the ELLIIT Focus Period Symposium on Visualisation-Empowered Human-in-the-Loop Artificial Intelligence, joining leading researchers and international scholars to tackle critical challenges in AI transparency and human-AI collaboration.
About the event
The ELLIIT Focus Period Symposium marks the culmination of a five-week international focus period hosted at Linköping University, Campus Norrköping (April 28 – May 30, 2025).
In recent years, experts in visualisation have developed innovative methods to interpret and demystify the “black box” nature of machine learning (ML) models. As AI/ML technologies rapidly evolve, the emergence of interactive AI systems engaging with diverse audiences raises important questions around trust, transparency, and bias. How can visualisation research adapt to enhance trustworthiness and identify critical biases?
This symposium provided a collaborative platform for in-depth discussions, presentations, and exchanges centred on these timely questions, emphasising human-in-the-loop AI approaches empowered by advanced visualisation techniques. The event primarily targeted researchers in machine learning (ML), visualisation (VIS), human-computer interaction, and AI transparency.
SmartCHANGE at the event
Among the international scholars participating throughout the focus period, Linhao Meng from Eindhoven University of Technology took part in the first session (April 29 – May 15). She delivered a seminar showcasing her PhD research and shared insights from the SmartCHANGE project.
During the symposium, Linhao presented an overview of how visualisation techniques can aid in explaining counterfactuals within the SmartCHANGE framework. Her session underscored the vital role of visualisation in making AI decisions more interpretable and trustworthy, especially in human-centred applications.
